Frequently Asked Questions

Technical questions are found in a separate FAQ once you have logged on.

For general questions about the site and the cookbooks click on the questions below:

What font does the book use?

We use the Baskerville font.

What size is the book?

We offer four beautiful bindings.
6×9 plastic coil with laminated front and back cover
6×9 wire bound with a wrap-around laminated cover
7×10 soft cover
7×10 hard cover

All cookbooks are printed on the highest-quality 100 lb silk-finish paper.
 Our paper is FSC certified.

What do the covers look like?

You can use one of our professionally designed covers or upload one of your own designs (no extra cost). All covers are in color.

Can we add advertising pages in the back of the cookbook?

Yes, you can do this using the Extra Page function (no extra cost).

Do you offer any other types of bindings, like three-ring binders?

We can work with you to make almost anything you can dream of! We prefer coil and wire bindings as they lie nice and flat on the counter, which is important for cooks! Soft and hardcover books are perfect for heirloom treasured family cookbooks! Contact me (virginie@heritagecookbook.com) to discuss other options not listed.

What about putting pictures into my book – is this difficult?

It’s super easy.
And you don’t have to be a photo or design whiz.

Do I need to be good with computers to do this?

You DO NOT need to be a computer whiz to do this.
We have tested the whole system on our grandmothers
and they said we passed with flying colors.
We are also here to help you when you need it!

I started my book on your previous system. Can I still access my file?

Yes. In July 2013, we upgraded our system to a newer platform (tech talk for we had to modernize our online tools and software!). We took advantage of this revamp to make improvements to our page design. Many of the comments and feedback from members were so useful! All old cookbook files were automatically transferred over. If you have already placed an order, your original file (in the original design) is with the printer and can be re-ordered as is. If you open your file to make changes, it will be re-formatted to our new template automatically. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: Please make sure you preview your old files CAREFULLY before they go to print as some of your original manual formatting (hitting the space bar or tab to indent, etc…) could change the way the recipe lays out on the new page format.

What happens if I run out of time on my free trial before I order my book?

All the data you have input as a trial member will transfer over and be waiting for you once you upgrade to a regular membership.
(And you don’t pay retroactively – you only pay for the time you are using. In other words, if your membership lapses in January, and you buy a month in August, you only pay for August, not the time between January and August).

What if I don’t have enough photos?

You have full access to a library of free graphics and photos from HeritageCookbook.com to use with your recipes.
All members have free usage of vintage photos from our library. We add to the library all the time and we give our images to you for free.

Can I re-order books?

Yes, you always have the ability to re-order more copies of the original, without paying any membership fees. You can order more copies at any time because the printer keeps your file.
All you need is the name of your file that you received via email on your original order.
If you want to continue to work on your file to make a different cookbook,
you may extend your membership and keep your cookbook “live.”

What are your guidelines for reprints?

When you have printed your book, we continue to store it for free
just in case you want to print more copies or add a few more recipes.
If you want to revise your book over a longer period of time, just reactivate your membership for a longer period. If you just need to correct a few typos, e-mail me and I’ll reopen your account for free for a week.

When we are fundraising, what is the suggested pricing
for selling these cookbooks, in order to make a worthwhile profit?

Most people have found that they can make between 75-90% profit. Do take a look at my mom’s fundraising guide for helpful hints (she was a professional fundraiser in her “corporate” days!).

What is the minimum order?

The wonderful printer we found has agreed to a minimum of just four cookbooks.
For the softcover and hardcover options, the minimum cookbook order is ten – anything smaller and the cost per book would just not be in line with our reasonable and competitive pricing philosophy!

You will probably want more, but we wanted to give you the option of
ordering a really small quantity.
This is also very useful for fundraising as you can order a small quantity
and then take orders for the exact number you will be able to sell.
NO LEFTOVERS eating into your profits.

May I use my own local printer?

We only print with our trusted printer with whom
we have an electronic link, so that your files transfer safely.
This is so that we can be assured that all Heritage cookbooks will be of the highest quality and that you will be happy with the treasure
you have produced.
That way, we can safely promote our books as having the best quality.

How do you calculate shipping costs?

Shipping costs are calculated according to weight. We ship small orders via FedEx Ground and large orders via truck.
We will ship anywhere.

All prices are in U.S. dollars
• One Month Free Trial – make a book and order it when you are ready

• $39.95 – for 2 months

How much does it cost to print a cookbook?

The cost of printing your cookbook depends on the number of pages, the breakdown of color versus black and white,
and the number of copies you decide to print.
The cost also varies depending on the binding you choose. The system will count the number of pages in your book.
Every cookbook is priced according to the exact number of pages.

Can I see a Proof of my book before printing?

We have a fast and inexpensive way to proof your work. You just print out the
Preview File on your own printer so that you can proof it yourself.

When you order 200 books or more a hard copy proof is included in the price of the printing.

What is an ISBN and do I need one?

An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a controlled, 10- or 13- digit identification number allowing publishers and book retailers to identify their books. For more information on ISBNs, please go to http://www.isbn.org. An ISBN is only needed to have a book distributed and sold through the book-industry commerce chain.

FAQ’s

How many pages can I have in my book?

Three of the four bindings can handle 400 pages. The wire-bound cookbook has a maximum of 150 pages.

Is the cookbook in color, or in black and white?

Your cookbook will have a color cover.
The inside pages are printed in black and white or color – your choice.
Or mix color and black and white to make an impressive book that meets your budget.

When it says a 150 page cookbook, does that mean 150 pages
front and back sided (so 75 pieces of paper), or 150 pieces of paper and 300 pages?

150 pages means back and front, or 75 pieces of paper.

And there is no extra cost for “personal pages,” black-and-white photos, advertising pages,
etc. A page is a page to us.
The only price difference is if it’s a black-and-white or a color photo.
